Our Process

SWA works with the client and owner to establish the desired look and feel of every space. We then determine a concept that uses the absence, presence, amount, quality, and/or focus of light to define the architecture, provide interest to the space, make it functional, and give it a memorable identity.

The luminaires we choose are meant to complement and blend seamlessly with the architecture. SWA uses standard equipment as much as possible, but we are willing and able to work with manufacturers to design modified and custom luminaries, when the budget allows.

Energy concerns have become a dominating aspect of the construction industry. SWA designs to IES-recommended illuminance levels while optimizing power density. We keep abreast of the latest luminaire and lamp technologies and make use of them as appropriate. We provide intricate detailing for complex mounting conditions as needed. We are proficient in the use of lighting control systems to comply with modern energy requirements and provide preset lighting scenes, controlled automatically or manually, to enhance the appearance of the space, save energy, and extend lamp life. We use “dim-to-warm” LED lighting systems for warmth and comfort.

The combined knowledge of Mr. Watson and his team allows for a complete and comprehensible lighting design experience. In renovation as well as new construction, SWA can develop a fresh approach to light every space in a functional and aesthetically pleasing way.
